Tamale, Ghana –The Administrator of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), Renous Awuah, has made a passionate appeal to MTN Ghana to assist management to renovate an old gynecology ward.
According to him, the inadequate space and facilities in the Obstetrics and Gynecology unit was compelling management of the hospital to let mothers and their new born babies lie on the floor instead of lying on beds.
Mr. Awuah made the appeal when MTN Ghana today presented 20 hampers to some mothers of the TTH and the Central Hospital who delivered on the night of December 26th which is also considered Boxing Day.
Checks by Savannahnews uncovered that, the old gynecology ward which used to also house the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) until a few years ago MTN Ghana Foundation constructed a new one for the hospital, has torn out window nets and broken louver blades, giving chance to mosquitoes to invade the ward.
More serious is the fact, the building which accommodates about 15-20 patients at a time, has leaking roofs and also serve as hideouts to rodents and lizards.
Mr. Awuah however commended MTN Ghana for the show of benevolence to the new born babies and their mothers, and urged other corporate bodies to emulate their example.
The Area Sales Manager of MTN Ghana in charge of the three regions of the North, Kwesi Osei, said the presentation was part of the corporate social responsibilities of MTN Ghana.
He said that was not the first time the largest telecommunication network was making a presentation to mothers and their babies, stressing that the December 26th act of benevolence dated back to some 8 years ago.
Mr. Osei however hinted that MTN Ghana would take a look at the request made by the Administrator of THH. “It may not necessarily be the building per say but may be some other areas that the hospital is challenged”, he said.
Meanwhile, 14 female babies and 10 males were delivered at both hospitals as at 8am on December 26, 2017 when the MTN Ghana team led by Mr. Kwesi Osei went to make the presentation.
