LGBTQ Abhorrence in Ghana: Life of Journalist Under Threat; Warned to Stop Advocacy or Get Killed

Kumasi, Ghana – Kamal Dauda is a young Ghanaian who resides in Asawasi Zongo, a predominantly Muslim community in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

He believes in the principles of love, peace and forgiveness as espoused by the teachings of Islam, a religion he professes.

Thus, since public outcry against LGBTQ and their activities in the country started surging a few years ago, Kamal has been worried about such minority groups.

A freelance journalist by profession, he has been one vocal person who uses every available platform to educate and encourage others to show compassion to LGBTQ people.

During one of his advocacies at a local radio station in one of the zongo communities recently, he opined that “stigmatizing LGBTQ people and other minority groups is insensitive and ungodly”.

Unfortunately, following his persistent public advocacy both on and off radio for people to treat LGBTQ persons with compassion, Kamal’s life has now come under threat. His home was recently attacked and his room ransacked while he was away.

“Some youth in the community I live in have threatened to take my life if I don’t stop the kind of advocacy I have been doing. In fact, they have ransacked my home a couple of times in search of me. In all instances they met my absence and left warning notices with my neighbours to tell me to stop the advocacy for the LGBTQ people otherwise they’ll kill me.”

According to Kamal, due to the constant threats against him, his family has also been at the receiving end as people are beginning to cast aspersions against them any time they see them in public.

He told this reporter that he no longer sleeps in his house for fear of his life.

“I sleep in friends home in different communities close to Asawasi Zongo. But I am afraid if my friends get to know they’ll expose me to my persecutors to come after me and so Im looking for an opportunity to leave the country to a place I can have the peace of mind and be accepted for the work I do.”

Though he has reported the incident to the Asawasi Police Station, Kamal is still not at ease with himself. The visibly worried young journalist believes there’s very little the police can actually do to help him since majority of Ghanaians are against LGBTQ people.

At the time of filing this report, Kamal could not be reached again. Checks by this reporter with his neighbours suggest he might have relocated to a different town because it has been a while they have seen him around.
