Tamale, Ghana – City authorities in Tamale have set January 13 as a day to Impound all unregistered vehicles that operate in the metropolis.
According to the Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, Iddrisu Musah Superior at a news briefing on Thursday, the city authorities would arrest and prosecute owners of commercial vehicles who had failed to register their vehicles but were using.
He lamented over the increasing spate of unregistered vehicles in the metropolis say, “There are so many vehicles in Tamale especially commercial motorist who go about with their business with their vehicles registered”.
Mr. Musah Superior disclosed that, statistics at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Tamale showed that 80% of vehicles including commercial tricycles also known as “Yellow Yellow” operating in the metropolis were unregistered.
“We will start a very important exercise from Saturday January 13; we will come after anybody who drives a vehicle without proper registration. Any vehicle, be it commercial or private used in Tamale must be registered by the DVLA. It’s not proper; it’s illegal and criminal to drive a vehicle within the metropolis without the vehicle being accounted for by authorities” he stated.
Mr Musah Superior indicated that, the impounding of the unregistered vehicles would be “huge, effective and severe” but was quick to add that much focus will be on unregistered commercial tricycle operators.
This law enforcement exercise is seen as another hurdle for the MCE to cross following series of similar failed interventions since he assumed office last year.
It would be recalled that, the mayor embarked on a decongestion exercise within the central business district in the first quarter of 2017. It was followed with another tough decision to chase out illicit drug users in the Aboabo and Nobisco forest reserves as well as commercial sex workers in notable drinking spots in the city.
Savannahnews can state authoritatively that, the traders are back on the streets, drug users have since returned to the forest and the prostitutes are still at work.
