Tamale, Ghana – Some irate residents of Gbulahagu, a suburb of Tamale, last Sunday took the law into their own hands and violently attacked a team of officers of the Ghana Police Service for attempting to rescue a 35 year old woman whom they accused of being witch.
Speaking to the press, the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Yussif Tanko, said the police picked intelligence that a 35-year-old woman called Memunatu Neindoow was being attacked over allegations that she was a witch.
Police officers were immediately despatched to the community to rescue the helpless woman.
According to him, upon arrival, the police met the victim who was besieged by her angry and wild-eyed assailants in a burnt thatch house with bruises all over her body.
ASP Tanko indicated that as soon as the team attempted to rescue Madam Memunatu, there was an unannounced blackout followed by heavy gunshots purportedly from AK47 rifles amidst throwing of stones and other unidentified objects.
He said the team quickly retreated to their vehicle to leave the community but on their way out, the road was blocked with logs and rocks in an attempt to cause obstruction to their ‘escape’ from the weapon wielding enemies.
He added that when the officers tried to remove the road blocks, the residents accosted them with stones and unleashed more gunfire at their vehicle.
He said the police team escaped with broken windscreens, rear windshield and side glasses.
“When they left the community, they realised that in the heat, one of their men had been left in the community, so they quickly mobilised and sent men there and he was rescued and brought back” he added.
The whereabouts of Madam Memunatu is not immediately known.
However, ASP Tanko noted that the case of attack on the police and Memunatu was under investigations and the officers will do everything possible to ensure that the perpetrators were brought to book.
