Accra, Ghana – Founder of non-profit organisation, the GAB Foundation, Professor Mrs Goski Alabi, has called on Ghanaians to remember the poor and vulnerable in society, saying “the gift we give to this category of less-privileged people is rendered unto God”.
The distinguished university professor who was speaking at a short ceremony organised for persons with disabilities and the needy at Nungua in the Greater Accra Region last week Saturday, said “it is our duty as Ghanaians to at times go to the elderly, widows, widowers, physically challenged and the less-privileged in our society to share our love and care.”
Mrs Alabi, who is also the Dean of International Affairs of the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) explained that, the donation was part of the NGO’s core activities of empowering the beneficiaries to engage income generating activities for their own sustenance.
The NGO has touched hundred’s of lives in the Teshie-Nungua communities in Accra since its establishment.
Over the last few years, the NGO has provided persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups with wheel chairs, working machines and tools as well as scholarships to study.
Both young and elderly beneficiaries received specific support targeted at their needs especially university education, health, equipment for training, trade and among others.
The 2017 edition beneficiaries were presented with various packages including wheelchairs, table top freezers, electronic grinding machine and tools for shoe making, knitting machines, medical bills and scholarship packages for university students.
The vision of the GAB Foundation, she said is to work with persons with disabilities, their families, friends and community, while aiding them to achieve their full potentials and also promote their full integration into society.
This, she noted would help to avoid the unnecessary isolation and stigmatization of persons with disabilities as they are being provided with relevant and quality training and opportunities as well as protecting their entire well-being.
The mission of GAB Foundation, Mrs Alabi added, “is to develop and empower persons with disabilities to become self-sufficient and independent, eliminate physical, legal and psyco-social barriers and to foster a healthy non-disabled and disabled relationship.”
She noted that most of the beneficiaries, based on investigations, have the ability to develop and apply their God-given talents and skills to engage in profitable ventures in order to eke out a living without depending on anybody.
She disclosed that having discovered that some are handicapped and unable to move around to achieve their vision, the NGO considered it imperative to assist them with wheel chairs in order to facilitate their movement.
Lepowura Alhaji M.N.D. Jawula, who chaired the function applauded the NGO for its intervention and the foresight to offer realistic solutions to reduce unemployment that remains one of the major challenges facing the country’s youth especially persons with disabilities.
One of the beneficiaries, Ebenezer Nortey, lauded the foundation for the kind gesture and urged the management of the NGO to keep the flag of its philanthropism flying high.
