Buipewura Brokers Peace Between Gonjas And Tampulmas

Diisah, Ghana – Paramount Chief of the Buipe Traditional Area in the Gonjaland Kingdom in the Northern Region of Ghana, His Royal Highness Buipewura Mahama Abdulai Jinapor II, has initiated moves to resolve the chieftaincy dispute between Gonjas and Tampulmas in the North Gonja District.

The two tribes have been at loggerheads for years now over rulership in communities believed to be predominantly occupied by Tampulimas.

But the recent standoff between the two tribes resulted from the payment of royalties by some members of the Gonjaland tribe from some communities which are predominantly occupied Tampulimas.

Two communities, Dissah and Salugu, in the area were razed down. Food stuffs and other personal belongings of dozens of families were also burnt to ashes.

To amicably resolve the problem, the Buipewura who also doubles as Vice President of the Gonja Traditional Council, visited the affected communities in the North Gonna District to find a lasting solution that will bring peace to the members of the two tribes.

The aggrieved parties were allowed to present their cases and after deliberations, the Buipewura asked leadership of the factions to smoke the peace pipe.

Addressing the media after successfully resolving the conflict, the Buipewura underscored the need for factions in conflict to use peaceful methods to address their  differences.

He urged aggrieved parties to seek redress in the court of competent jurisdiction rather than taking the law into their own hands.

He also entreated the security agencies to deal ruthlessly with those who foment troubles in the area.

“Ethnic violence in the Northern Region is gaining notoriety. Almost on daily bases, security personnel are being deployed to troubled areas to provide security in one chieftaincy problem or the other. Sadly, these violence conflicts are sometimes instigated and financed by some individuals or group of people. These “conflict profiteers”’ usually help establish “gun culture” and arm the energetic youth to foment these troubles. This is a source of worry to everyone myself”, he indicated.

The Buipewura called for a by-partisan approach in dealing with violent conflicts in the region.

He also called on the security agencies to be bold and firm in dealing with chieftaincy problems in the Northern Region.

The Tampulma Chief in Lingbinsi, Tika Sulemana Jahnfo and his counterpart Gonja Chief, Peter Awusi Yakubu Jatowura agreed to give peace a chance.
