Mobilise Your Members For NHIS Registration -Disability Groups Urged

Tamale, Ghana – A Senior Officer in charge of Monitoring and Evaluation at the Northern Regional Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mohammed Abdul-Salam, has appealed to disability groups to mobilise their members who have no NHIS membership card for registration.

According to him, persons with mental illness and epilepsy, orphans, visually impaired, poor families and the physically disabled among others, were qualified under a category called indigent to benefit freely from NHIS registration.

Mr. Abdul-Salam however indicated that, despite there was a package for persons with disabilities as well as other poor and vulnerable groups to benefit from free NHIS registration, there was still a significant number of such persons not registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme.

He therefore urged the various disability groups including the Ghana Blind Union, Associations of Persons With Mental Illness and Epilepsy and orphanages in the Northern Region, to mobilise their members to be registered with the NHIS.

Mr Mohammed Abdul-Salam made the appeal in an interview with journalists in Tamale during the 2017 performance review meeting of the NHIA Regional Office.

The 2017 performance review meeting is one of the important events on the operational calendar of the National Health Insurance Authority, as it offers managers the opportunity to review their past performance and chart a new way as well as adopt new strategies for the year 2018.

At the end of December 2017, the Authority’s performance in the Northern Region was Ghc879, 609.00 representing 89.7 percent of its annual target. This is below its initial target of Ghc980,581.00.
