MCE Impeachment: Jirapa Traditional Council Distances Itself, Calls Allegations Baseless

Jirapa, Ghana – The Jirapa Traditional Council has described as baseless allegations levelled against the Chief Executive of the Jirapa Municipality in the Upper West Region, Christine Bonbanye Amadu, and thus distanced itself from same.

In a statement, the Council through its Registrar said the Assembly members who are calling for the impeachment of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) are doing it for their “individual parochial interest”.

It would be recalled that a story which surfaced last week alleged that some members of the Jirapa Municipal Assembly numbering about 18 had started processes to impeach the Municipal Chief Executive, Christine Amadu.

The story also reported that the Presiding Member of the Assembly was petitioned to call a meeting where a vote of no confidence can be passed on the MCE.

The assembly members according to the report accused the MCE among other things of “unconscionable corruption”, financial malfeasance and disrespect for the Assembly and the Jirapa Traditional Authority.

But the Jirapa Traditional Council in their statement signed by the Acting Registrar, Mr. Gobiel Alpio, disclosed that the traditional leadership in the area have nothing against the MCE and that they are solidly behind her in ensuring that her development agenda is realized.

The statement also said the Council and the Paramount Chief have no knowledge of the said impeachment process, thus advising people to desist from attaching the name of the Chief of the area to the issue.

“The Traditional Council also want to use this opportunity to warn any individual, groups, and the general public to desist from using the name of the Paramount Chief and his elders in matters that will tarnish the image of the paramountcy” the statement read.

The Council pledged to support the MCE in addressing the teething problems of the Jirapa Municipality and further called on “the Assembly members, the youth, opinion leaders and all stakeholders to work together with the MCE to bring the needed development rather than engaging in individual’s parochial interest and baseless allegations”.

Tendaama

In a related development, the Tendaama of the Jirapa Traditional Area in a statement acknowledged receipt of the “Notice of Motion under Order 17 of the Standing Orders” which seeks to impeach the Municipal Chief Executive.

The statement signed by ten Tendaama however stated that “we the Tendaama of the Jirapa Traditional Area are not in support of the motion moved by some aggrieved members of the Jirapa Municipal Assembly regarding the impeachment of the MCE”.

The Tendaama also advised the Assembly members making the allegations to report such matters of illegality if any “to the appropriate authorities for further investigations rather than engaging in personal attacks”.

They said all hands should be on desk if they want the area to develop.

Meanwhile, the Assembly Member of the Tampaala Electoral Area, Anicetus A. Bayor who was part of the petitioners has recused himself from the process and apologized to the MCE.

In his letter of apology, Mr Bayor stated that he did not intentionally sign the petition to impeach the MCE.

According to him, he was called to register for a motor bike to which he appended his signature not knowing it will turn out to be a signature to impeach the Municipal Chief Executive.

“I want to declare wholeheartedly to you on receipt of this letter that I have isolated myself from any said impeachment issue if it was not registration for motor bikes”, the letter added.
