Accra, Ghana – MTN Ghana is urging government to support youth in technology, innovation and application (Apps) development as it has the potential to generate massive employment for the teeming youth.
Acting Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Ghana, Noel Kojo-Ganson indicated that technology and innovation have been recognised as imperatives for achieving gender equality and empowerment for girls, and in view of this, MTN is championing a project for women in technology, where young girls receive mentorship from women in ICT working in this organisation.
To this end, he stated that MTN, as a business, prides itself in giving full and equal access to women in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
He was speaking at the finals of the MTN Apps Challenge V5.0 at the MTN media centre in Accra.
At the finals, MTN awarded all 24 finalists app developers who excelled with their works and for participating in the challenge.
Razak Issaka’s ‘Man Must Chop’ animation series was adjudged the overall winner. He received a cash prize of GH₵20,000. The other winners received hundreds of thousands of Ghana cedis in cash.
In the senior high school category, Presbyterian Boys Senior High, Edinaman Senior High and Keta Senior High Schools placed first, second and third, respectively. They received certificates of recognition.
The MTN Apps Challenge, since its inception some five years ago, has given several Ghanaian youth the opportunity to develop and take up challenges in our economy.
The MTN Apps Challenge season 5.0 sought to bring together app developers, animators and tech enthusiasts for a chance to create products which would bring in value and advance the tech scene in Ghana.
The competition, dubbed ‘Empowering the Youth in Developing Innovative Digital Projects’, was opened to senior high and tertiary students and freelancers who are to develop apps and solutions in the categories of mobile apps, Internet of Things (IoT), and animated videos.
A new category for ‘Best Female Developer’ was added to encourage more female participation in the contest.
This is because evaluations made from the previous editions of the event showed that it was male dominated, hence the need to encourage female participation.
Renowned Ghanaian software engineer, Farida Bedwei, who was at the event, urged upcoming entrepreneurs and innovators to focus more on solving problems in society as that will automatically generate wealth for them in the long term.
She was of the view that innovators and app developers will go places when they sacrifice in their field of expertise, given that the creation of applications (Apps) remain powerful tools in our world today, creating connections with individuals and communities.
He urged all app developers to continue to innovate by developing locally relevant applications to stay relevant in this fast-paced digital world.
