Ban on Logging And Charcoal Burning Takes Effect At West Gonja

Damongo, Ghana – The Youth of Damongo in the West Gonja District, numbering about 200 on motorbikes and tricycles on Monday mounted barriers at the entry points in Damongo to seize loads of logs and charcoal as the one week ultimatum given to logging and charcoal burning elapsed on Sunday midnight.

Some trucks that were in the bushes left early to avoid confrontations from the youth, leaving behind thousands of bags of charcoal that were later set ablaze by the youth since that is the only option left.

They burnt many bags at Frafra settlement and about three thousand bags at Yipala farming communities.

The youth further seized bags loaded and about leaving Damongo and also arrested six vehicles at Busunu with three carrying logs and the rest carrying bags of charcoal including three chainsaw machines.

Meanwhile, the Kutunkure family who are responsible for the lands in Damongo were up in arms against the youth seizing the charcoal.

The Kutunkure family who are landowners of Damongo said they see no reason why the Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura never involved them on the exercise even though they started with it all.

They said letters were shared and distributed to people who matter without recognising their family who are the landlords of Damongo.

They therefore organised to stop the youth from the action of seizing charcoal and also demanded an unqualified apology from the chiefs of the land.

Meanwhile the DCE for West Gonja Saeed Muazu Jibreel organised a meeting with the Kuntunkure family to calm tempers which saw them coming into an agreement to be part of the exercise.
