Nandom, Ghana – Security has been heightened at Nandom in the Upper West Region after a bloody clash erupted over a love affair involving a Wangara male and a Mossi lady.
At least, one person sustained cutlass wounds in the melee, Upper West Regional Minister and head of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) Alhassan Sulemana told Class91.3FM’s Valentina Ofori Afriyie on 505 on Friday, 24 August 2018.
Narrating the incident to Class FM, the minister said the family of the Mossi girl was not happy after their daughter’s lover camped him in his house for three days without any of the girl’s family members knowing about her whereabouts.
They eventually traced the love birds and whisked the girl away but she run away to join the boyfriend once again after two days, a situation that compelled her angry family members to troop to the boyfriend’s home for answers.
In their demands for the whereabouts of the girl, clashes erupted between relatives of the love birds on either side, resulting in a bloody feud that resulted in one person sustaining machete wounds and others sustaining injuries.
A mosque was decimated in the conflict.
The situation has increased tension in the community as residents fear reprisal attacks.
Personnel of the Ghana Police Service are currently in the community to calm the situation.
No arrests have been made yet but Mr Alhassan Sulemana said both factions have some names they suspect are the major brains behind the disturbances.
REGSEC met on the matter on Friday and is set to meet again on Saturday, 25 August to ensure calm.
