West Gonja: Chiefs, Politicians & Religious Leaders Cautioned Over Interference in Criminal Matters

Damongo, Ghana – The youth of Damongo in the West Gonja District of Northern Region have cautioned chiefs, politicians, religious and other opinion leaders to stop interfering in matters of criminality being handled by the police.

They claim it is because the criminals have people who always come to their aid, that is why stealing and other criminal activities have become rampant in the Damongo township and it’s adjoining communities.

The Youth have therefore sent a serious warning to the leaders to desist from freeing criminals from police custody.

“It is becoming a norm these days to see Chiefs and politicians at the police station making efforts to release criminals anytime there is a case.

“The Youth have therefore vowed to sack any chief from the police station anytime there is a case.

“Just last week, 3 boys were arrested for stealing solar panels who were later released as a result of a chiefs intervention”, Mr. Saaka Alhassan, an opinion leader and resident of Damongo told Bole based Nkilgi FM.

According Mr. Saaka Alhassan also known as Disco guy or Kennedy Agyapong, it is unacceptable for the chiefs, politicians and religious leaders in Damongo to go to the extent of pleading with the police to free criminals in their custody.

He said there are many stealing cases that end without prosecution of the culprits and that is encouraging those behind such acts to continue since they know someone will always speak for them.

He cited the case of a young boy who stabbed someone and the District Chief Executive for West Gonja Saeed Muazu Jibreel intervened and made sure that the boy who was arrested by police was set free.

According to him, stealing of motorbikes is so rampant but the cases get no where because a chief, politician or religious leader will intervene.

He called for the prosecution of anyone involved in any criminal act in Damongo.
