UWR: Pupils of Goripie Saeddiyya School Observe Lessons on Bare Floor

Wa, Ghana – The lower primary pupils of Goripie Saeddiyya Primary school in the Wa East District of the Upper West Region sit on bare floors to obverse classes due to lack of furniture. The situation is very worrying and has made teaching and learning very difficult as teachers have no option than to go on their knees in order to supervise the work of the children. The problem is very serious in class one, class two, class three and four.

Speaking to Radio Waa News crew, the Chairman of the Parent Teachers Association (PTA), Mr. Abdulai Saani indicated that, the situation is very worrisome and should be given all the attention it deserves. He added that, the PTA is working hard to mobilize resources and construct some furniture to ameliorate the situation while waiting on government and other philanthropies.

“In fact, the current situation of the school in terms of furniture deficit  is giving we the executives sleepless night and we are doing all it takes to also do what we can while waiting for government support” he noted.

The Chairman also appealed to other civil society organizations and Non-governmental organizations and the international world to come to their aid as the school is in dying need of furniture, adding that, the current condition of the school has resulted into high school dropout coupled with its repercussions.

“There is high rate of school dropout because of this canker and you know what this can cause, seriously the school is in dying need of furniture and we want to call on the NGOs and the international world to come and support us” he added.

On his part, Mr. Mohammed Zakaria, Assembly member of the community stated that, he has sent several reports to the district Assembly and the Assembly made it known to him that, the problem is affecting many schools across the district.

“I am aware of this furniture deficit in the school, I relayed it to the DCE and he said the Assembly is advancing plans to get the school and others some furniture, but the issue is, when will there be in we don’t know, I am also doing all that I can in my powers to get support for these poor pupils, they are our future generation” he indicated.

Meanwhile, some parents who narrated the ordeal they wards have been going through at the school, promised they are arranging to get funds even if they will do contributions to construct some furniture for the pupils.

“I have been hearing that our wards sit on the bare floor to take their studies and I never believed until one day I went to observe it myself. Upon seeing my child, he was lying flat on his belly while writing I wept and left, I am going to call on all parents so that we schedule a meeting and act fast before it becomes late” a parent narrated.

However, the District Chief Executive is yet to respond to the issue, but the District Director of Education, Mr. Evan Kpebaa when contacted said, it is the full responsibility of Assembly to provide pupils with furniture, adding that, his outfit is aware of the situation and has also communicated it to the District Assembly.

The Upper Primary too in not left out though their issue is quiet better than the lower primary, but a dual desk mend for two, is accommodating three pupils, making it three pupils per a dual desk.
