Bimbilla, Ghana – As part of the global campaign against violence, over 900 women groups in the Nanumba District of the Northern Region have presented a petition to the District Chief Executive (DCE) Abdulai Yaqoub.
Women in rural areas are often marginalized in the management of the home.
They have mostly been ridiculed, maltreated and tagged as witches.
In some cases, communities have banned them to due to the stigmatization.
According to the women, they are forced to stay home and deprived of basic amenities.
They said some women have been denied their right of association.
The Project Officer of ActionAid-Ghana, Safura Abdallah, said ActionAid was supporting the women in Nanumba North District as part of the power project to improve their livelihood and also build their capacity to tackle some of the social ills.
She indicated that ActionAid wants to strengthen women to deal with violence and called on all stakeholders to find ways of addressing issues affecting women in society.
“Most at times girls are made to stay at home to take care of their siblings instead of going to school to be able to engage in economic activities.”
Receiving the petition, the District Chief Executive for Nanumba North, Abdulai Yaqoub, said the petition of the women groups would be given the necessary attention at the assembly.
He gave assurance that the concerns of the women would be addressed after the discussion of the petition.
The DCE thanked ActionAid-Ghana for supporting the women in the area.
