Tamale, Ghana – The Upper East Regional Minister, Paulina Patience Abayage has opened the Upper East Agricultural Fair in Tamale with a call on residents to take advantage of guinea fowl production which the region produces about 60 percent for export to other regions.
According to the Minister, the region hopes to glide on the back of the rearing for food and jobs flagship programme of government to increase production to 100 percent, adding that “we need to construct ranches in three agricultural zones to boost cattle production”.
Madam Paulina also touched on some great potentials in the region which include the Tono and Vea irrigation dams which are currently undergoing reconstruction and revamping which would result in a total of 3,340 hectares of irrigable land to boost crop production.
The former Ghana Ambassador to Italy encouraged investors to come and invest in the production of smocks, handicrafts such as baskets, clay pots, leather wears among others which Upper East is noted for in terms of quality.
She used the occasion to urge foreigners and Ghanaians who had not yet visited the region to do so because the people are very hospitable and the region also has rich tourist attractions such as the Paga crocodile pond, the slave camps, the Tongo hills and the Sirigu Women’s Organization for Pottery and Art (SWOPA) Centre.
