UW/R: Fire Service Trains 105 Fuel Station Attendants And Managers

Wa, Ghana – The Upper West Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service, has trained one hundred and five (105) fuel station pump attendants and their managers in the Wa Municipality.

The training was to enable participants understand the statutory role of the Ghana National Fire Service as enshrined in ACT 537 of 1997 and to build the capacity of participants on prevention and management of fuel station fires.

Participants were also thought how to practically respond to fire at the initial stages at their work places.

Topics treated include the statutory role of the Ghana National Fire Service , effects of fire outbreak , constituents and components of fire, classes of fire, methods of fire extinction, emergency response procedure and how to use fire extinguishers.

The Upper West Regional Safety Officer, Divisional Officer Grade 3 Ayireke Timothy, said the training of the fuel station pump attendants and their managers is a routine exercise usually undertaken by the safety Unit of the Ghana National Fire service.

He called on pump attendants to desist from using their mobile phones whiles attending to clients.

The Manager for Total (3) Fuel Station in Wa, Mr. Muniru Hamza commended the Ghana National Fire Service for organizing the training for pump attendants and their managers to enhance their knowledge on fire safety measures.

Meanwhile the Public Relations Officer for the Upper West Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service Mr. Martin Bakobie also revealed that the Service is committed to providing fire cover for the entire region during the festive season.

He entreated all in the region to be proactive in the handling of electrical appliances and naked flames.

Mr. Bakobie revealed that the Regional Command of the GNFS from January to 17th December 2018 recorded one hundred and forty-six (146) fire outbreaks.

He said out of the number of fire outbreaks reported under the period, 61 cases were domestic fires, 23 bush fires, 13 vehicular fires, 24 commercial fires, 6 institutional fires, 9 electrical fires and 10 rescue operations after accidents .

He said the GNFS last month embarked on a door to door fire safety education in the entire region to educate and entreat people to adhere to fire safety measures.

The PRO also called on shop owners to ensure they put off all electrical appliances after close of work.
