Sawla, Ghana – President of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations, David Aniah, has entreated Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to give persons with disabilities under their care the opportunity to decide what they want to do with their share of allocation in the District Assemblies Common Fund.
Speaking to stakeholders at Sawla in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region during a meeting organized by NASCO, a nongovernmental organisation on Thursday 17th January 2019, Mr. Aniah said MMDAs have failed PWDs under their care.
“There are still a lot of problems facing our members. People are given wrong items they never requested or applied for. There is a woman called Madam Juliana. She applied to the Sawla Assembly for a table top business but at the end she was given a refrigerator, we followed up and found out that her community is not even connected to the national grid”, Mr. Aniah disclosed.
Speaking to Nkilgi FM, Mr. Aniah called for a dissolution of committees set up by the MMDAs with membership including Coordinating Directors saying “the coordinating directors and other officials of the Assemblies are not supposed to be part of such committees”.
Speaking on behalf of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Assembly, the District Coordinating Director said that even though there are challenges confronting PWDs in the area there is improvement.
According to the Coordinator, nine PWDs benefited from the Planting for food and Jobs programme in 2018.
“….. there are about 20 tricycles to be solicited for PWDs and an application letter to sponsor people at the Wa School for the Blind and other Disability Schools….
“also, two laptops were secured for two disabled students in tertiary institutions”.
