Nanung Deserves a Substantive Overlord – Concerned Citizens

Issahaku Ben Hussein

Tamale, Ghana – Government’s ability to solve the Dagbang chieftaincy matters has emboldened a group calling itself the Concerned Citizens of Nanung in collaboration with the Local Mediation Team to plead with government to turn its attention to the Nanung Traditional Area where there are similar challenges.

The group’s President, Issahaku Ben Hussein said government’s unprecedented record of bringing lasting peace to Dagbang should be replicated in the Nanung Traditional Area.

He raised the concern in an interview with Abdul Karim Naatogmah following the performance of funerals of the late two Yaa-Naa’s and the subsequent peaceful enskinment of His Royal Majesty, Yaa-Naa Abukari Mahama II as the new King of Dagbang.

He attributed the area’s underdevelopment to the absence of peace and a substantive Chief there, hence the renewed call on government to take quick action.

“As the Concerned Citizens of Nanung, we are very happy about the tactful manner government handled the Dagbang chieftaincy matters. Government must turn its attention and do all it can to solve the Nanung Traditional Area Chieftaincy dispute.”

According to him, there remained some unresolved issues in connection with the Nanung Namship despite the Supreme Court’s ruling that the late Naa Andani Dasana II was the legitimate Bimbilla Naa.

Issahaku Ben Hussein said the funerals of the late Naa Andani II and Nakpaa-Naa Salifu Dawuni should be performed without further delay.

This in his estimation will pave the way for the nomination and eskinment of a substantive Bimbilla Naa who will be acceptable to all.

He held the position that the composition and the role of the Kingmakers in Nanung must be clearly defined to forestall any unforeseen circumstances leading to the nomination and enskinment of a substantive Bimbilla-Lana.

Out of nine Kingmakers, he explained that the Kpatihi-Naa and the Jo-Naa are the final deciders.

Even though there were other gates gates in the past, ascension to the Bimbilla Namship is between the Bangyili and Gbugmayili lately.

Genesis

Letigitimacy to the Bimbilla Overlordship has been in dispute for decades.

Families of the late Bimbilla-Lana Andani Dasana and the late Nakpaa-Naa Salifu Dawuni have been battling with claimancy to the title in the Northern Regional House of Chiefs and in Court.

The Supreme Court’s final ruling on the case reaffirmed the late Naa Dasana Andani II as the Overlord of Bimbila.

Like Dagbang, Naa Dasana Andani Yakubu II was murdered by unknown assailants, while the case was pending at the National House of Chiefs.

His gruesome murder led to some unrest in the area and a 12-hour curfew was imposed on the Bimbilla Township.

The incumbent Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Sae-ed who masterminded the solution to the Dagbang chieftaincy conflict, Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, Ace Investigative Journalist, Anass Aremeyaw Anass and Ghana’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh T. B Damba are some of the illustrious sons from the Nanung Traditional Area.
