UW/R: Wa Municipality Records 82 Fire Incidences in 2018

Wa, Ghana – Information from the Wa Municipal Command of the Ghana National Fire Service shows that eighty-two (82) fire incidences were reported in the municipality in 2018.

Out of the number, 30 cases were domestic fires, five vehicular fires, 18 commercial fires, 13 bush fires, 2 institutional and electric fires and one rescue operation.

The Wa Municipal Fire Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service Eugene Asa –Gyekye who made this known in an exclusive interview said the number of fire incidences reported within the municipality reduced in 2018 as 93 fire incidences were reported in 2017.

51 domestic fires were reported to the Ghana National Fire Service in the Wa Municipality in 2017.

Twelve vehicular fires, 11 commercial vehicles, 11 bush fires, three institutional fires and three electrical fires were also reported to the service in 2017.

The Wa Municipal Fire Officer said the number of fire incidences recorded in the municipality reduced because the service carried out house to house fire prevention education in some communities in the Wa Municipality.

He said households were taken through basic fire prevention methods in their homes and handling of liquefied petroleum gas for daily cooking.

The Wa Municipal Fire Commander however entreated all in the municipality to be proactive in the handling of electrical appliances and naked flames and weed around their surroundings as weeds serve as treat for bush fires during the harmattan season.

He called on residents to usually call them on time to help salvage their proprieties whenever there is a fire outbreak.

In a related development, Fire outbreak was reported at the former Midway Bakery in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region on Monday .

The Wa Municipal Fire Commander Eugene Asa –Gyekye told this reporter that the Municipal Command was alerted about the fire outbreak at about 10:58am to salvage the situation.

He said his men arrived at the scene in less than 3 minutes after which another backup from Upper West Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service arrived to support.

He said his men were able to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes and the fire was completely extinguished by 11:30am on Monday.

He said they later launched their investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak and realized that it could not be attributed to electrical fault or gas leakage.

He attributed the fire outbreak to an unattended fire set with a coal pot in one of the rooms at the former Midway Bakery.

He said about three to four rooms were razed down by the fire outbreak.

He said properties running into thousands of Ghana cedis which were lost through the fire outbreak could have been salvaged if they were called on time.
