UW/R: Infirmary at Wa Central Prisons Runs Out of Drugs

Wa, Ghana – An inmate at the Wa Central Prisons (name withheld) has called on the people of the Upper West Region to support the infirmary at the Wa Central Prisons with drugs.

He said inmates with various health conditions in the prisons may be faced with a situation of relapse if the infirmary is not supported with drugs as soon as possible.

He said with the onset of the warm season in the region, there is the need for Prison Authorities to decongest all eight cells at the Wa Central Prisons to prevent any possible outbreak of celibro spinal meningitis (CSM).

The inmate expressed concern that, over 29 to 40 inmates currently share a cell in the prisons.

He made this known over the weekend when the Sunday School Department of the Revival Assemblies of God Church in Wa presented some assorted food items to the prisons inmates.

The items presented include two bags of rice, four boxes of key soap and Nido.

A cash amount of GH₵130 was also presented to purchase a fan for cell 5, which has about 30 inmates but without a single fan.

The inmate said many of them who have been imprisoned for close to 10 -15 years have been neglected by their families.

He noted that their families accepting them back after their sentence was also another hurdle for them.

Another inmate appealed to government to provide resources to enable them gain employable skills while serving their sentences.

He stated that though the officer in charge of training inmates in tailoring is willing to train more people, only three sewing machines were available for the over 200 inmates at the Wa Central Prisons.

Mr. Prosper Konlan of the Revival Assemblies of God Church said that the church’s core mandate is to show love to everyone in society and encouraged everyone including Christians to visit people in prison to demonstrate the love of God to them.

He also encouraged the inmates not to give up on their dreams, noting that some key persons like Joseph, Apostle Paul and Silas in the Bible were imprisoned but didn’t give up on the gospel of Christ Jesus.

Mr. Konlan stated that Joseph became a Prime Minister of Egypt after he was released from Prison.

Mr. Alfred Kaebo, a member of group also led the team to pray for God’s protection for the inmates.
