N/R: MTN Ghana Mobilises Over 600 People to Donate Blood For Tamale Hospitals on Val’s Day

Tamale, Ghana – One of Ghana’s leading corporate social responsibility investors, MTN Ghana – has mobilized 669 people to donate blood for the Tamale Teaching Hospital and other key health facilities in the Tamale Metropolis and Sagnarigu Municipality.

Mainly students from the University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale Technical University (TaTU), Tamale Senior High School (Tamasco) and other members of the public, the donors donated over a hundred pints of blood which were received by the blood unit of the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

The telecom company set up four donation points on the campuses of UDS, TaTU, Tamasco and the premises of the Northern Regional Library, where donors gathered in their numbers to donate 450 milligrams of blood each.

The annual exercise, which started some 11 years ago, has grown to become a nationally accepted one on every Saint Valentine’s Day, the day chosen by MTN Ghana to embark on blood donation.

Northern Sector Area Sales Manager at MTN Ghana, Kwesi Osei Hyeaman, said the exercise is very important to the efficient delivery of healthcare. “We’ve been committed to this cause as a company over the years because blood is essential in healthcare. People cannot afford to wait on a hospital bed when they need blood and it’s not there. So we are doing this to stock our hospitals so that there would be enough to save lives of mothers, children and pregnant women”, he told Savannah News.

Mr. Hyeaman thanked all the donors especially the students for coming out in their numbers to support one of the important CSR initiatives of MTN Ghana. “Let’s continue to do this every year for mother Ghana”.

Elisha Larry, a nurse with the Blood Unit at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, appealed to the general public to walk in anytime at their own convenience and voluntarily donate to keep the blood bank running.

He said as a referral hospital, the TTH constantly needs blood to run and also supply to other hospitals operating in Tamale and Sagnarigu when there is request.

He thanked MTN Ghana for collaborating with the hospital every year to embark on such an important exercise to save lives of humans.

The blood collected would be distributed to the Tamale Central Hospital, Tamale West Hospital, SDA Hospital and some district hospitals while the remainder is stocked at the blood bank of the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
