Accra, Ghana – The African Centre for Security and Counter-Terrorism has urged the government to, as a matter of urgency, critically rethink the role of the political leadership in the communities affected by the Chokosi-Konkomba war.
One person was gunned down in the latest communal clashes between the two ethnic groups in the North East Region.
The clashes started on Saturday afternoon at Naduni where feuding locals prevented each other from farming a disputed land.
The African Centre for Security and Counter-Terrorism, in a statement signed by its Executive Director Emmanuel Kutin, said it notes “with sadness that despite all the efforts to have the Chereponi violent clashes resolved, they have, instead, continued to protract. We commend the President’s 18th May 2019 call for people and chiefs of the area to embrace peaceful coexistence”.
The group, however, strongly made the following suggestions:
“i. the government should, as a matter of urgency, critically rethink the role of the political leadership in the affected communities in the continued occurrences of these violent clashes.
“ii. media framing and reportage of the clashes should go a step further to include narratives that empower the affected communities to refocus on building resilience against violent provocations.
“iii. Indigenes of the region should all see these violent outbursts as casting aspersions on the dignity of the entire region and help Chereponi to put an end to these violent occurrences.
“We further assure the government and people of Chereponi of our resolve to readily offer research-informed leads that help to put an end to these violent conflicts and restore stability for peaceful development.”
