Gurumuni, Ghana – The pupils and teachers of Gurumuni and Boli, two farming communities in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region of Ghana can now heave a sigh of relief as the Wa Municipal Assembly has provided them with three (3) unit classroom blocks and KVIP toilet facilities with urinals.
The development is an attempt to ease up classroom congestion and curb open defecation in the two schools.
According to teachers of both schools, teaching and learning have become difficult as each classroom contains as many as 80 pupils; that is two classes put together in one classroom.
Construction of the Gurumuni three (3) unit classroom block was funded by the District Assembly’s Common Fund (DACF) at a total cost of Ghc183,294.75 whiles that of Boli was constructed at the cost of Ghc184,535.52 from the District Development fund (DDF).
In inaugurating the two projects at separate durbars in the communities, the Wa Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Tahiru Issahaku Moomen said, the Nana Addo’s Led administration is committed to making education cheap for all Ghanaians, “that is why provision of classrooms, furniture and school feeding are being put in place to reduce educational burden on parents”.
He said, the provision of the three unit classroom blocks in each community is in fulfilment of the government’s campaign promise.
He said the Assembly would furnish the two schools as soon as they are ready.
Alhaji Issahaku Moomen said, the Assembly was preparing to provide six unit classroom blocks for class one to six and another block as Junior High School in each of two communities, so that pupils would no more commute to nearby communities to attend JHS after completing class six.
He advised parents not to send their children to farm when they are supposed to be in school.
On her part, the Deputy Director of Planning and Statistics of the Wa Municipal Education office, Madam Justina Asima, who received the keys to the two school blocks advised the parent teacher associations and school management committees of the two schools to take good care of the school blocks.
She also advised parents to support their children with school uniforms and other necessary materials to promote teaching and learning.
