Accra, Ghana – Hajia Zuweiratu Mada Nashiru, a native of Chereponi has called on parties in recent clashes to lay down their arms and engage peacefully for the resolution of all issues that have caused the conflict.
Hajia Zuweira said that peace had to return first to the community before anything else could be done.
She was speaking at a peace forum held in Agbogbloshie in Accra to discuss the situation in Chereponi.
In an impassioned plea, Hajia called on all factions to see themselves as one with a common destiny and common challenges. She said that continued fighting would scare away investors and professionals who are posted to the area, which would lead to further underdevelopment.
Hajia explained that while fighting in Chereponi had placed all activities on hold, other communities in the country were busy trying to improve themselves and said it was time for Chereponi to join those communities in bettering the lives of citizens.
The Physician Assistant and social activist said her experiences on a recent visit to the area were a stark reminder of the many development issues that residents face.
These, she said, should be the prime concern of everyone and not fighting, which she said had no benefits for anyone. “We do not have health centres; we do not have doctors; we do not have teachers and yet we are sacking the ones there because of the insecurity,” she said, going further to ask, “how can we resolve all these, if we do not put our arms down?”
The town of Chereponi in the newly created North East Region has seen clashes in recent times between Konkombas and Chokosis, resulting in loss of life and property and the displacement of several people. Economic and social activities in the community have been adversely affected with some residents escaping to find safe haven in nearby communities. A curfew has been placed on the community but it has failed to prevent further clashes.
Meanwhile, Hajia is planning a peace walk in Chereponi and has called on all who want peace to support her in the initiative.
She has also appealed for a strengthened security presence in the area to protect the vulnerable and discourage further attacks.
