Tamale, Ghana – The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly has indicated that it will deal with recalcitrant teenagers in the metropolis who engage in lawless activities.
The Assembly has rekindled its zeal to fight indiscipline among the youth and prosecute any individual or group found to be trading in sex, smoking marijuana or engaged in any kind of deviant and unlawful behaviour in the capital of the Northern Region.
The Assembly, over the weekend, met with some stakeholders in the central business area including the leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), traders and parents to deliberate on strengthening their collaboration to fight streetism, prostitution and indiscipline among the youth in the city.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, Iddrisu Musah Superior, blamed the stakeholders for failing to give the city authorities the needed support to arrest the situation.
“The only problem affecting the people of Tamale is indiscipline; we know the law and we are afraid of the law. We know that if we commit crimes, we would be taken to the police, we would be prosecuted. What leads most of us to commit a crime is indiscipline.”
The assembly, in 2018, initiated a programme dubbed: “Tamale Project” to fight social vices involving minors on the streets at night and to decongest the business district by clearing hawkers and unapproved structures on the principal streets. This suffered a major setback due to agitation by some groups.
According to the mayor, some opinion leaders have now realised the importance of the project and have pleaded for its restoration.
Mr Superior emphasised that the welfare of the people is always the priority of the Assembly and maintained that: “We have never done anything wrong.”
Meanwhile, the Industrial Relations Officer of the G.P.R.T.U, Alhaji Salifu Mashud said the union is working with the Assembly to implement measures to end insecurity and lawlessness at the various bus terminals in the metropolis.
