Congestion at Tamasco: MTN to The Rescue With a 600-bed Hostel Facility

Sagnarigu, Ghana – Ghana’s Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has cut sod for the construction of a 600 bed girls’ hostel at the Tamale Senior High School (Tamasco) in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region.

Dr. Bawumia himself an old student of Tamasco, described the project, an initiative of MTN Ghana, as the largest single infrastructural investment in the school since its establishment over 60 years ago.

“…..Indeed, MTN continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting and investing towards the socio-economic development of Ghana. In its twelfth year, I must commend MTN Ghana Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of MTN Ghana for investing approximately US$13.5 million or nearly Gh₵72 million in 147 social development interventions nationwide out of which 52 are education projects.

“I must add that this 600 bed girls’ dormitory project will be the 148th project by MTN Ghana Foundation. It is a demonstration that MTN is a socially responsible corporate organisation interested in impacting on the lives of its clients and communities”, Dr. Bawumia said these on Friday when he broke the ground for commencement of work.

The Vice President also underscored the need for all Ghanaians to support female education at the secondary and tertiary level since the dropout rate at the secondary level in particular is still high.

About The Project

The project, solely financed through the MTN Ghana Foundation will cost a little over Gh₵2 million. It is by far the biggest project to be invested in Northern Ghana by MTN and will take approximately eight months to be completed and handover to the school authorities for use.

Upon completion, all dormitories in the hostel facility will be furnished and fitted with 600 beds, bathrooms and toilet facilities. Additionally, a bungalow for the housemistress will be built.

Why The Project

Tamasco currently has about 1,200 female students, and only half of this number has access to accommodation which is also not conducive due to congestion, bed bugs infestation and heat.

The situation led MTN Ghana to intervene and provide the Tamale Senior High School with a modern dormitory block so as to ease the challenges the students are facing.

Chief Executive of MTN Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh in his speech, said the telecom company believes the project will bring hope and peace of mind to many talented young people from Tamasco and nearby communities.

He called on the Ghana Education Service, the contractor and headmaster and all teachers of Tamasco to collaborate and see to it that the project is well executed.

Meanwhile, headmaster of Tamasco, Wilberforce Adam thanked MTN Ghana for considering them for the project which he believes will ease the burden of students’ accommodation on him and his staff.
