Tamale, Ghana – Upper East Regional Minister, Tangoba Abayage, has expressed shock mobile telecom company MTN Ghana, would offer her just 90 minutes free airtime after 18 solid years of being their loyal customer.
According to her, 18 years ago, she had to travel all the way from Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region to Accra, the nation’s capital (roughly 800kms) to join a long queue the offices of MTN just to buy a sim card.
After 18 long years of staying loyal to MTN which has gone through series of evolution, she said ‘she woke up’ recently to a text message she received from MTN supposedly congratulating her on her anniversary on the network.
MTN according to its text message also dashed her 90 minutes free airtime for on-net calls but warned that “Bonus is valid for 3 days”.
The obviously dissatisfied Upper East Regional Minister in a facebook post said: “check my reward for staying loyal to mtn for 18 years! I traveled from Bolgatanga Accra, Osu to buy the mtn chip. Osu, for 380 cedis at that time (I don’t know how much that is today). Sometimes, silence is indeed gold.”
Madam Tangoba would later add in the comment section: “The sickening part of it is before you blink an eye this whole thing of loyalty package is gone with the wind!#mtn smh!”.
Clearly from the post, one could tell the minister has been using her sim card since the days of Spacefon which would later ‘transform’ itself into Areeba and now MTN.
The minister’s post also echoes the views and concerns of many loyal customers of MTN and other telecom companies such as Vodafone Ghana and AirtelTigo.
Telecom companies over the years have adopted many ways of rewarding their loyal customers. Some of the ways include celebrating selected loyal customers on their birthday by giving them custom-made cakes, souvenirs or free air-time for on-net calls which expires after 48-72 hours.
Unfortunately, not everyone is happy with these kinds of rewards. While some think the reward packages are too small others think it is just insulting to offer a customer free air-time and turn around to take it back when the customer is not able to exhaust all of it.
Margaret who commented on the minister’s post said: “……this is very annoying paaaaa. With the cars and houses they give out, this is how they pay us for our loyalty to them eh? hmmmm”. Aaron also wrote “This is a mockery! Not a celebration of loyalty”.
