NHIA Hunts Illegal Private Scheme Operators

Mr Hudu Issah

Accra, Ghana – The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is on a manhunt to eliminate all illegal Private Scheme Operators, especially those involved in scheme shopping.

Director of the Private Health Insurance Scheme Directorate, Mr. Hudu Issah disclosed this in an interview and said investigations are underway to smoke out the illegal Scheme Operators and prosecute them.

According to Mr. Hudu Issah, due to the fraudulent activities of the illegal Private Scheme Operators, his Directorate has been empowered to ensure that the illegal Operators and Quacks are apprehended and prosecuted.

He disclosed that many people have been victims of the illegal Private Scheme Operators transactions and advised them to stop gambling with people’s health.

“I welcome the forceful move to sanitize the industry so that the illegal Operators will not continue to defraud Ghanaians. It is sad that the NHIA is losing billions of cedis to the illegal Operators.”

“We believe that the initiative will reposition the NHIA to its rightful place and enable government tap from the gains in the industry to attain the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.”

He reaffirmed the NHIA’s readiness to enforce the laws guiding Private Health Insurance Schemes operation in the country in line with Section 63 of the NHIS Act 852, 2012.

He revealed that the NHIA has so far licensed 14 Private Scheme Operators out of which 13 are Private Commercial Health Insurance Schemes and one Mutual Scheme.

Mr. Hudu Issah said the NHIA had set a minimum premium and benefit package for all licensed Private Scheme Operators to deal with the undercutting in the industry.

“I therefore urge all licensed Private Scheme Operators to ensure that their members are fused in the National Health Insurance Scheme in pursuant of Section 27 of Act 852, 2012. I also advise the licensed Private Scheme Operators to desist from engaging uncredentialed service providers in conformity with Section 10 of Act 852, 2012.”

The NHIA’s Private Health Insurance Scheme Directorate is in charge of registering, licensing and supervising Private Health Insurance Scheme Operators in the country.
