Yendi, Ghana – MTN Ghana has joined the chiefs and people of Dagbon to celebrate this year’s Damba festival at the Gbewaa palace at Yendi in the Northern Region of Ghana.
As part of activities lined up to make the festival a memorable one, MTN Ghana organized a football gala and donated set of jerseys worth over Gh₵6,000.00 to the winning teams.
As a company that believes in African values and the African heritage, management led by acting Northern Sector General Manager, Simon Amoh on Thursday again presented a cash donation of Gh₵10,000.00 towards the occasion which is scheduled to climax on Saturday November 16, 2019.
Additionally, Mr. Amoh also presented Gh₵1,000.00 worth of airtime to the King of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II and his council of chiefs to enable them communicate effectively throughout the festive occasion and beyond.
“We pray for God’s guidance and wisdom for our king and we thank him so much for also making available lands in his kingsdom for us to build our cell sites”, he said.
The king also commended MTN Ghana for coming on board to support the festival with gift offerings and asked management of the company not to hesitate to contact him whenever they need his assistance to expand their services in his kingdom.
“Myself and my elders are ever ready to support MTN to expand their business. If you want to extend coverage of your network to other communities and require land to site your equipment don’t hesitate to contact me for support”, he spoke through an interpreter.
Damba festival is celebrated annually by the chiefs and people of Mamprugu, Dagbon, Gonja, Nanumba and Wa. It is celebrated to mark the birth and naming of Prophet Mohammed but the actual content of the celebration is a glorification of chieftincy.
For nearly two decades, the Dagbon kingdom never celebrated Damba under the authority of a sitting Ya-Na. This was due to the vacuum that was created following the murder of the former Ya-Na Yakubu Andani II by unknown assailants in 2002. This year’s Damba is therefore seen by many sons and daughters as an effort to further consolidate the peace and unity of Dagbon and its people after successfully installing a new Ya-Na just few months ago.
