ActionAid Ghana Campaigns on “Decent Work”

Tamale, Ghana – ActionAid Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) says it is poised at getting the government of Ghana to improve upon workers working conditions.

It is also striving to protect the rights of both employees and employers, as well as apprentices and their masters in the formal and informal sectors of the economy.

Since the launch of its “Decent Work” campaign in May this year, ActionAid Ghana has organized series of workshops with youth groups such as Young Urban Women Movement (YUWM) as well as Activista in Tamale in the Northern Region of Ghana to realised the aforementioned objective.

The “Decent Work” campaign seeks to address issues of social security/pension plans for workers both in the formal and informal sectors, salaries, unpaid care work, sexual harassment at work places, working in a safe environment amongst other issues which mostly affect women.

ActionAid Ghana has also organized community sensitization engagements with apprentices and their masters in the informal sector to enlighten them on their rights and duties at their places of work.

However, the Tamale office of ActionAid Ghana has incorporated their activities into an on air Radio discussion program dubbed; “Decent Work.”

The on air broadcast will start on Tamale based radio stations 123FM on Wednesdays 8:30am – 9:30am on “Breakfast 123” as well as Radio ABC on Sundays 10am – 11am starting November 27th and December 1st, 2019 respectively. The discussions will be in English and Dagbani languages.

This is a move to reach a larger audience on the “Decent Work” campaign.

The program will seek to ensure that the fundamental principles of engagement at workplaces are adhered to, and Human Rights protected.

There will as well be discussions on good working environment, Standing up against corruption to promote accountability, Campaigning against gender stereotypes and sexual harassment in the workplace and a lot more to promote “Decent Work.”

The general public will be educated on the International Labour Law, a body set aside to regulate public and private issues concerning the human rights and duties of employers, employees, trade unions and governments in regulating the workplace.

In Ghana, the Labour Act 651 of 2003 regulates employment and Labour issues. This Act consolidates all laws relating to labour, employers, trade unions and industrial relations.
