A Plus, Others Seek High Court Order to Compel Roads Ministry to Fix Streetlights on Tema Motorway

Kwame Asare Obeng

Tamale Ghana – Musician and political activist, Kwame Asare Obeng, has served notice he and other like-minded Ghanaians will seek an order from the High Court to compel the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ghana Highway Authority to fix streetlights on the Tema motorway and other major roads.

While imploring interested individuals to join him for a class action, Kwame Obeng also known in showbiz as A Plus said among others, the court will be asked to grant individuals who will join the suit free access through the Tema motorway tollbooth.

Below is his full Facebook post:

Article 41 (g) of the 1992 constitution requires that every citizen contributes to the wellbeing of the community where they live”. That is why for so many years, about thirty thousand motorists pay toll when we use the motorway.

In 1997, Ghana passed a Road Fund act, (Act 536) section 2 (1) which states that the money shall be used to “finance routine periodic maintenance and rehabilitation of public roads”.

This simply means that we citizens shall pay our toll and government shall ensure that our roads are kept in good shape. Unfortunately, governments over the years have failed to satisfy their part of the social contract. The motorway today has become a death trap and paying toll to use it is like paying for your own death.

We have therefore decided to go to the High court to seek an order of mandamus to compel the ministry for roads and highways and the Ghana highway Authority to fix streetlights on the motorway and other major highways.

We shall also seek that all individuals and organizations who will be part of the suit do not pay toll when we use the motorway and other toll roads until the case is determined.
