Tamale, Ghana – The monthly security report of the Institute for Peace and Governance (IPEG) continuous to show a rise in violent related crimes in the Greater Accra and Central Regions of Ghana.
For the month of December 2019, the report indicated the Greater Accra, Central and Eastern Regions recorded 21, 12 and 10 incidents respectively whereas the Bono and Oti Regions emerged as the most peaceful regions recording not a single incident.
Closely following the Bono and Oti Regions were the Western North, Savannah and North East Regions which recorded single incidents each specifically armed robbery/armed attack and road accidents.
A total 69 incidents were recorded in all 16 regions comprising a total number of 36 deaths and 252 injuries across the country, a statement signed by Head of Programmes at IPEG Justin Bayor and copied to Savannah News has said.
According to the statement, the highest incident for December was disaster recording 11 incidents whereas the second highest incident- armed robbery and armed attacks recorded 10 incidents.
Dubbed “State of Security in Ghana”, the report focuses on 17 different indicators such as youth related violence; violence against women; violence against children; politically motivated violence; road accidents; armed robbery/armed attack; corruption; arms proliferation; murder/suicide; and farmer pastoralist clashes.
The rest are oil and gas/mining related violence; disaster-fire outbreaks/arson, floods, rainstorms, drought; health related violence; human rights abuse; threats of violent extremism; strikes and labour/industrial unrests; chieftaincy, ethnic, land and religious violence; and drug related crimes.
The Institute for Peace and Governance is a think-tank that undertakes research into peace and security matters in order to inform policy directions. It seeks to critically engage relevant focus areas on peace, conflict, human security and governance aimed at informing policy formulation and institutional practice in Ghana.
