S/R: NGO Supports 240 Girls In West Gonja District

Damongo, Ghana – Mmakunim Foundation, a non- governmental Organisation (NGO) based in the USA has presented mensurationz management kits to some 240 female students in the West Gonja District in the Savannah Region of Ghana.

The students, who are from Yabum Junior High School (JHS) and the Damongo Girl’s Model School, range from the ages of 13 to 19 years.

Speaking to the media, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mmakunim Foundation, Akosua Afrankoma Peprah, said the focus of the NGO is to end period poverty by providing the kits to the 240 girls in the District for a period of 3 years.

Additionally, the girls will be engaged in vocational and technical training such as sewing, basket weaving among others.

She explained further that the Mmakunim Foundation over the period will also engage the girls in monthly reading and writing workshops to improve on their reading and writing skills.

She added that her NGO is much focused in helping girls especially those in the rural areas stay and succeed in school. Provision of assistance in the form of educational materials and sanitary hygiene products and services alongside violence prevention and wealth creation will be undertaken.

The Head of Girl Child Education at the Ghana Education Service in the West Gonja District, Grace Hawa Kifantang thanked Mmakunim Foundation for the initiative.

According to her, many female students finds it difficult going to school anytime they are in their menstrual period but that has become a thing of the past with the education and support from the government and NGO’s like Mmakunim Foundation.

She therefore appealed for more support from other organisations to enhance what Mmakunim Foundation has started.

Some parents who witnessed the program also thanked the Mmakunim Foundation for supporting the girls in the district.

Each student received a menstrual kit with items such as sanitary pads, bag, deodarants, panties and other items.

Team Member and Director of Mmakunim Foundation for the West Gonja District Yakubu Tahiru Prince said a total of 244 students benefitted on the first day of the Launch of Mmakunim Foundation at the West Gonja District Assembly office.
