Damongo, Ghana – Alhaji Salifu Adam Braimah, Savannah Regional Minister, has implored on the media to “change the narrative” by focusing more on issues that would fast track the socio-economic development of the area and not those that would further divide and impoverish the people.
Alhaji Braimah lamented that as a new region, the media tend to focus more on “politics and chieftaincy” issues when they could highlight on the potential for agriculture, hotel and restaurant business, transportation and accommodation among others.
“We have water challenge. Water does not flow in my residence. In the morning you’ll see students carrying gallons on their heads searching for water. Nonetheless, we are trying to address all these challenges.
“In the Mole National Park there are alot of investment opportunities especially in the area of hotels and lodges and so on. We only have Mole motel, and Zaina lodge which is overpriced. And so if we have more of such facilities it would speed up development.
“Again, in the area of agriculture, we have large tracks of land for farming. Some Chinese have expressed interest to come and do some farming but because of this coronavirus, things have delayed a bit. When more jobs are created the unemployed youth will not have time to engage in any violent behaviour”, he pointed out.
Mr. Braimah said these when the Executive Director of Countrywise Communication, Raymond Vuol led a group of journalists attending the 3rd edition of “The Harmattan Awards For Development Journalism” at Damongo the Savannah Regional capital paid a courtesy call on him at his office on Thursday morning.
The journalists also ceased the opportunity to ask the minister series of questions key amongst them being the steps government was taking to address some of the development challenges confronting the newly created region.
Mr. Vuol commended the minister and the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council for the support they had provided towards the organisation of the awards programme.
The Harmattan Awards For Development Journalism is an annual awards scheme of Countrywise Communication, a media and development communication organisation based in Tamale in the Northern Region.
Since 2017, more than 20 journalists have been honoured for their efforts in promoting development journalism especially in the area of agriculture and climate change.
This 2019 edition under the theme: “The Role of The Media in Discovering Our Agricultural Potential”, would celebrate a crop of dedicated and hardworking agriculture reporters from the electronic, print and online media.
The awards is being organised by Countrywise Communication in partnership with the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council.
