OPINION: Draconian Measures Required to Contain COVID-19 in Ghana

Supt(Rtd) Peter L Toobu recommends draconian measures to contain COVID-19 in Ghana
………………………………….
Your Excellency
I bring you greetings from Wechiau in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region where we pray against even a single COVID-19 infection . It is my prayer that this message meets you in good health in this era of COVID-19. I may sound hard but cannot be harder than COVID-19.
It’s sad that the nation under your leadership slept on duty and failed to make timely decisions to prevent the arrival of COVID-19 in Ghana. We only seem to start acting amidst slowly when we negligently allowed the free importation of the virus into the country. After this shamefully regrettable importation, we ought to be forthright in dealing with the infected persons and their traced contacts. Unfortunately, this seems never to be the case as the numbers continue to rise hitting 52 as I write. From my opinion, you have failed the country but I can’t afford to lose hope in you because the pandemic is an existential challenge to humanity and all hands need to be on deck.
I want to contribute in my own small way towards the containment of the virus for the good of the public. Together as a people, we can kick out COVID-19.

With my experience living through Ebola Viral Disease (EVD) while serving the UN in Liberia and participating in global effort that finally brought EVD under control, I recommend the following measures to be considered with despatch;
1. Lockdown the Country for 7days extendable on review. Get our traditional leaders involved for maximum effect.
2. Give one week advance notice for the lock down.
3. Conduct mass testing in the 2 regions (GAR &AR) where people had been tested positive.
4. Deploy mobile testing devices to the other 14 Regions.
5. Declare the month of April 2020 as a month of zero tolerance for COVID-19.
6. Create a National prayer chain to deal with any spiritual implications.
7. Supply households with enough hand sanitizer beginning from the Greater Accra & Ashanti.

Your Excellency, with all humility, let’s be prepared to be radical in our approach by vying budgets to generate enough funds to fight the pandemic. Let’s budget for the worse case scenario.
It can be contained and lessons learned from China should not be ignored.
May the Lord continue to make our country great and strong. May we become more transparent and accountable moving forward.
Your Excellency, I’m humbled to have your attention.
This one too shall pass.

SIGNED
Supt (Rtd) Peter L Toobu
Wechiau, UWR.
