UW/R CSM: Togbe Afede Donates Towards Treatment of Victims And Research For Vaccines

Wa, Ghana – President of the National House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV has donated a cash amount of Ghc50,000 to the Upper West Regional Hospital to support the fight against Cerebrospinal Meningitis which has claimed the lives of some 40 people.

His Majesty Kuoro Richard Banini Kanton, President of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs who presented the cash,  said recent television footages and news coverage of the lethal effects of CSM which had been wreaking havoc on the people of Upper West Region, had sent shivers down his spine.

He noted that, while the nation was busily battling with the COVID-19 pandemic, which had claimed 9 lives so far, with all the energy and resources the nation could master, the CSM outbreak should also be given the needed urgent attention and treated with all the seriousness it deserves.

“Ghc30,000.00 of the Ghc50,000.00 cash donation was to serve as a seed money for the establishment of a fund to support local research towards the development of a vaccine for the treatment of CSM.

“The remaining Ghc20,000.00 should go into the procurement of emergency medical supplies to support the delivery of quality and timely services to patients receiving treatment for suspected CSM cases”, Togbe Afede directed.

The Regional Director of Health Services Dr Afreh Osei Kuffuor who received the cash donation on behalf of the Regional Minister at a short ceremony at the Upper West Regional Hospital, thanked the President of the National House of Chiefs for the support to the Regional Hospital towards the fight against CSM.

He added that several calls had been sent out for philanthropists to come and assist the region combat this CSM in the region and that he was happy that the President of the National House of Chiefs has deemed it necessary to assist the Regional Hospital during this trying moments with a cash donation. He assured that the money would be put to good use.
