Wa, Ghana – First confirmed COVID-19 patient in the Upper West Region has recovered fully and ready to be integrated back to the society.
This was revealed by the Upper West Regional Minister Dr Hafiz Bin Salih when he visited the Sissala West District and the Sissala East Municipal to interacted with the District/Municipal Public Health Emergency Management Committees today.
The meeting with the various committees was to know at first hand, the activities they had carried out so far and the challenges they were confronted with in the discharge of their duties in the fight against COVID-19 and Meningitis.
The Minister noted that though the first confirmed COVID-19 patient in the region had fully recovered and ready to be discharged, the major challenge now was stigmatization against COVID-19 patients.
Dr. Salih explained that, “having COVID-19 is not a licence to die” because even though Ghana had recorded a total of 9 deaths, total recovery rate of COVID-19 had gone up to 120 people which was very encouraging.
He advised the general public to stop stigmatizing COVID-19 and CSM patients to enable people voluntarily report to health facilities when they develop symptoms.
He described stigmatization as a disease that is more deadly than COVID-19 and CSM.
According to the Minister, the region still had 258 cases with 40 deaths. He added that, even though there wasn’t any approved vaccine for the Serotype X that is affecting the people, there was enough drugs (ceftriaxone) in the region for the treatment of meningitis.
The only challenge according to the Minister was late reporting to health facilities.
He therefore encouraged every individual to report early to any health facility when feeling any of the symptoms of CSM for prompt treatment.
The Upper West Region currently has 8 confirmed COVID-19 cases with one recovery. Seven in Wa and one in Nandom. The minister is also touring the remaining districts in the region to meet health management committees.
