Giving Women A Place At Decision-making Table Will Unleash Their Potential – Dinbian

Tamale, Ghana – Publisher and Editor-In-Chief of the Dinbian Magazine, Dinbian Joyce Ali Najouk has underscored that, the call for women empowerment in the Ghanaian society and the world over is not an attempt to wrestle power from men.

According to Ms Dinbian, society is only calling for the inclusion of women in critical decision-making bodies, fairness and equal opportunities irrespective of ones gender.

She observed that, when women are given a place at the decision-making table it will unleash their hidden potential to help in national development.

“I think the advocacy for women empowerment is not to wrestle to take the place of men. We are only calling for a simple inclusion of women in high decision-making bodies, fair level playground and equal opportunities for everyone irrespective of the gender. This way, women can unleash their innate potentials to add their quota for prosperity and National Development.

I think society has, after an introspection, realised it has denied itself over the years, the impact of women in nation building. Recently, nations have begun to increase women representation in higher decision-making bodies, in government and corporate organisations by way of legislation and affirmative action. Women have a quota to add, so if offered equal opportunities, their contributions will make a difference and make the world a better place”, she emphasised.

Speaking at the 1st National Stakeholders Conference and Launch of The Dinbian Magazine in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region, Ms Dinbian who is also Executive Director of Dinbian Foundation, said the Northern woman needs to be encouraged to venture into agriculture and agribusiness as well as other lucrative enterprises across the sectors of the Ghanaian economy.

“…. women are created in a powerful way. What we need is a spark to ignite by way of skills training and the discovery of women and the role they have to play in society. I wish to state without contradiction that these concerted efforts to empower women will be in vein if our young women and girls do not have the conviction and confidence in themselves that they can do it, should the opportunity be given them”, the celebrated Gospel musician added.

Under the theme “Empowering the Potentials of the Northern Woman for National Development”, the conference sought to inspire Northern women to work hard to the top by involving themselves in economic activities that will make them financially sound as well as trainings that will unleash their leadership qualities and push them to the top.

The one day conference brought together leading figures in women empowerment and rights advocacy, traditional leaders, celebrities and students.

Hajia Mrs Alima Sagito-Saeed, a leading gender activist who spoke on the theme of the conference, decried the rampant felling of shea trees across Northern Ghana which are a source of livelihood to many women.

She urged society especially men not to look on unconcerned while the source of livelihood of their wives and daughters are increasingly being destroyed.

Hajia Saito-Saeed also advocated for information sharing among women saying “women who have access to information are empowered to seek help when they are confronted with challenges emanating from gender-based violence”.

Meanwhile, the first and second editions of The Dinbian Magazine were launched at the end of the conference. The magazine features some prominent natives of Northern Ghana including entrepreneurs, traditional leaders, former beauty Queens and the publisher of the magazine.

Prior to the launch, hundreds of copies were distributed freely to selected senior high schools in the Upper West, Upper East, North East, Northern and Savannah Regions.
