Accra, Ghana – The Global President and CEO of The Hunger Project (THP), Mr. Tim Prewitt and the Global Vice President and Director for Africa and Mexico, Mr. Rowlands Kaotcha, together with the leadership of THP Ghana, met with Ghana’s former President, His Excellency J. A. Kufuor at his residence at Peduase on Wednesday, 30th March, 2022.

The purpose of the meeting was to officially introduce The Hunger Project to the Ex-President and to discuss opportunities for collaboration between The Hunger Project-Ghana and the J. A. Kufuor Foundation.

Mr. Tim Prewitt indicated that it was a humbling experience for him to finally meet with the Ex-President. He applauded the former President for his contributions towards the development of agriculture and nutrition initiatives in Ghana and at the global level. He also congratulated His Excellency J. A. Kufuor for winning the 2011 World Food Prize jointly with His Excellency Luiz Nácio Lula Da Silva for their personal commitment and visionary leadership while serving as the presidents of Ghana and of Brazil, respectively, in creating and implementing government policies to alleviate hunger and poverty in their countries.

The President of The Hunger Project Global said he was very excited about the collaboration with the J.A. Kufuor Foundation and looked forward to working in partnership to reduce hunger and poverty through agricultural transformation.

According to the Country Director of The Hunger Project- Ghana, Mr. Samuel Afrane, THP Ghana was attracted to the collaborate with the J. A. Kufuor Foundation because of its uniqueness, vision and focus. He said The JAK Foundation envisioned the establishment of peaceful, well-governed and economically sustainable societies in Ghana and Africa, which aligned very well with the vision and mission of the The Hunger Project.

The Ex-President expressed his excitement about the collaboration between his Foundation and The Hunger Project-Ghana. He added that the Foundation shares almost the same values as The Hunger Project, hence the need for them to partner and support each other to achieve their common goal of reducing hunger and poverty. The former President described his Foundation’s programs, which could be the starting point for future partnership with The Hunger Project. They included the Leadership program (Kufuor Scholars Program), governance and sustainable development programs, which focused empowering smallholder farmers to increase rice production. According to the former President, over 4, 000 students applied for the Kufuor Scholars’ program this year alone but only 30 of them would be enrolled due to resource limitation. He therefore appealed for support to enable the Foundation admit more students to the program.

The J. A. Kufuor Foundation seeks to promote effective leadership as the catalyst for good governance, and socio-economic development through advocacy, programmatic interventions and strategic partnerships with likeminded organizations and institutions.

The Hunger Project is an international community development NGO that is working to end hunger and poverty by pioneering sustainable, grassroots, women-centered strategies and advocating for their widespread adoption in countries throughout the world.

Also present at the meeting were Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah, CEO and Nana Ama Aning Oppong-Duah, Policy Advisor of the J. A. Kufuor Foundation.
