Tamale, Ghana – The Eastern Regional Hospital Laboratory (ERHL) and the Greater Accra Regional Hospital Laboratory (GARHL) in Ghana are the latest public sector laboratories to attain international accreditation, ISO 15189:2012, a requirement for quality and competence.
The two government hospitals have joined the likes of 37 Military Hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital,
and the National Public Health Reference Laboratory as institutions that have attained this high standard feat.
“In the private sector I am aware that institutions like the MDS Lancet, Metropolis and SynLab laboratories are also accredited to ISO15189: 2012”, Chief Medical Laboratory Scientist at the country’s Ministry of Health Dr. Ignatius Nchor Awinibuno said these in a Facebook post few days ago.
“Additionally, other public sector labs have been certified by Ghana Standards Authority onto ISO 9001, Quality Management Systems- Requirements. Many more are undergoing mentorship for accreditation and certification”, he added.
According to Dr. Awinibuno, these latest feats signaled hope for the healthcare industry in Ghana and would propel the agenda of the government and Ministry of Health seeking to make Ghana a preferred Hub for health tourism as well as promoting Ghana’s trade efforts.
“The feats chalked will also accelerate progress at meeting the Sustainable Development Goals/Universal Health Coverage set targets as part of Ghana’s health security agenda.”
He commended all stakeholders including the Ministry of Health, management of the two hospitals as well as staff of the laboratories who played leading roles in ensuring the these feats were attained.
