MTN Mobile Money Most Revolutionary Product in Ghana’s Financial Ecosystem

Tamale, Ghana – Collins Agyei, Area Sales Manager of MTN Ghana in-charge of the North Regions, has stated that “mobile money remains the most revolutionary product to have been introduced” by the telecom company into the country’s financial ecosystem since 2009.

According to him, the impact and results following the introduction of MTN mobile money have been very beneficial to many Ghanaians and the country’s digital payments sector.

“Today, MTN MoMo has impacted the lives of millions of people in Ghana and beyond and we couldn’t be humbled of how far we have come – from our first subscriber to over 11 million subscribers, offering mobile financial services to the banked and unbanked, and creating job opportunities for millions of Ghanaians.”

Mr. Agyei said this Wednesday when he led a team from MTN Ghana, MTN Mobile Money Limited and MTN ayo to launch the Northern Region’s edition of the 2023 MoMo Season in Tamale.

The theme for this year’s MoMo season, “Addressing the Barriers to Digital Payments Adoption in Ghana”, is a step further towards achieving MTN Ghana’s 2025 strategic goal of leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress as well as the drive for financial inclusion in Ghana and across Africa.

Kwame Aseye Akude, Manager in charge of Retail Experience in the North, said the Momo Season also sought to “celebrate and highlight the importance of the MTN mobile money service to the Ghanaian economy, create awareness about MoMo, bring the service to the doorsteps of a lot more Ghanaians, recognize our valued partners and the over 11 million subscribers who use our MTN MoMo.”

He added: “This year marks 14 years since MTN mobile money was launched and we couldn’t be prouder of how far we have come as a brand while also recognizing contributions to accelerating Ghana’s socio-economic growth and spearheading financial technology advancement. The ease and convenience of transactions and our reach across the country has boosted financial inclusion, made payments innovative and created jobs for many people.”

A 2022 GSMA report released earlier this year indicated that, West Africa was the world’s largest growing mobile money market, with Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Senegal emerging as mobile money leaders in the region. Also, the 2022 Summary of Economic and Financial Data by the Bank of Ghana revealed  mobile money transactions in 2022 hit a record Gh¢1.07 trillion despite the implementation of government’s controversial e-levy as compared to about Gh¢902.5 billion in 2021.

Meanwhile, as part of the 2023 MoMo Season celebrations, MTN Ghana and its subsidiaries MTN Mobile Money Ltd and MTN ayo would be undertaking a series of activities and campaigns across cities such as Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, Nkawkaw and Tamale.

There would also be among other things, consumer and staff promotions, market storms, stakeholder fora, digital campaigns, Catch Them Young Series where young people are sensitised on financial literacy and MoMo fraud education.

The launch was attended by mobile merchants, mobile vendors and distributors in Tamale.
