Sagnarigu, Ghana – Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer (CCSSO) of MTN Ghana, Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, has reiterated that the company was on course to attain its vision 2025 goal of becoming a technological company.
In line with vision 2025, she said MTN Ghana was investing $1 billion in network expansion to cover over 200 districts with 4G network and further development of hundreds of new sites with 2G, 3G and 4G networks specifically in the Northern Region.
According to Ms. Wiafe, the investment in network expansion which covered nearly 400 rural areas in the country including the Northern Region as well as establishment of a $25 million National ICT Hub cost $210 million in capital expenditure in 2023.
The CCSSO of MTN Ghana said these when she made a presentation on activities of the company to senior journalists and editors at this year’s MTN Editors’ and Stakeholders’ Forum on Thursday October 19th at Sagnarigu in the Northern Region of Ghana.
The MTN Editors’ Forum is an annual interface meeting between staff and management of MTN Ghana on one hand and senior journalists and editors of local media houses in the Northern and Savannah Regions on the other hand.
The Forum creates opportunity for MTN leadership to brief the media about the company’s operational challenges and achievements within the course of the year.
Management of MTN Ghana also use the Forum to elicit support from the media by way of receiving feedback from the public through them and give an indication as to how they are addressing certain challenges customers are experiencing. They partner with the media to create awareness about their operations to enable the public appreciate what they are doing to make things better as service providers.
MTN Ghana currently has over 15 million active subscribers, over 280,000 active mobile money agents and over 140,000 active mobile money merchants, said Ms. Wiafe.
She indicated that, the company contributed Gh¢4 billion to the national tax system of which Gh¢3.7 billion was from direct and indirect taxes.
“We also invested Gh¢93.2 million in social impact projects since inception”, she said, adding “Between 2020 and 2022 alone, MTN Ghana Foundation committed Gh¢15 million to digital initiatives across different sectors of the Ghanaian economy.”
The MTN Ghana Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, however admitted that, fiber cuts, mobile money fraud and network problems continued to be the major challenges of the company.
She implored on local contractors, companies and individuals building close to major roads to first engage MTN Ghana to show them where their fiber cables were sited so as to avoid cutting them and causing disruption to the network connection.
