Tamale, Ghana – MTN Ghana Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of Ghana’s leading telecom company MTN Ghana has carried out its twelve “Save a Life Campaign” initiative in dozens of schools across the country.
The Save a Life Campaign is an annual activity by the MTN Ghana Foundation in collaboration with the National Blood Bank to mobilise blood resources from the general public to restock the blood banks of various hospitals across the country.
This initiative, according to Collins Agyei, Northern Sector Area Sales Manager of MTN Ghana, began in 2011 and had over the years, mobilized thousands of blood resources from Ghanaians to support hospitals run efficiently.
“In the Northern Region today, we’re doing this blood donation exercise at Ghana Senior High School, Tamale Senior High School, Northern School of Business, Bimbilla and other places.
“We chose to do this every year in the month of love which is February. We want to use the occasion to show love to our friends, relatives and other Ghanaians on admission in hospitals and urgently in need of blood”, he told SavannahNewsOnline and other journalists in an interview in Tamale .
Mr. Agyei said the target set for this year was to mobilise 7,000 units of blood across the country and was hopeful that by the end of the exercise the target would have been met or exceeded.
He commended the management of the National Blood Bank, staff of the Tamale Teaching Hospital Blood Bank, staff of MTN Ghana and particularly the general public for their consistent partnership and support over the last ten years.
Leader of the Blood Donation Team at Ghana Senior High School, Alidu Issahaku briefing the media, said the exercise was going on smoothly as expected because of the level of enthusiasm and willingness amongst many students to donate.
According to him, the Blood Bank Unit of the Tamale Teaching Hospital which was supporting MTN Ghana Foundation to Mobilise the blood from the general public was expected to collect about 400 units of blood in Tamale alone.
“Looking at the number of students who are here we may hit our target or exceed. Nonetheless, I’ll encourage the general public to find time and walk in anytime at the Tamale Teaching Hospital or any public hospital and request to donate blood because when you donate you safe a life and you also benefit a minimum amount of health screening as a donor”, he explained.
