Accra, Ghana – The Sangu Delle Foundation in partnership with the Cardinal Dery Foundation, has launched the Cardinal Dery Scholars Program.
This initiative was unveiled on Friday May 10, 2024, on the commemorative birthday of the late Cardinal Peter Dery, a statement announced.
The program aims to provide comprehensive scholarships to promising students from underprivileged backgrounds across Ghana.
The program, named after Cardinal Peter Dery of Nandom, a revered figure known for his extensive educational outreach, especially among the underprivileged in Northern Ghana, aims to provide essential support to promising students facing financial hurdles.
Cardinal Dery, who was posthumously given the title “Servant of God” in July 2013, is remembered for his lifelong dedication to education and the spiritual upliftment of his community.
The Cardinal Dery Scholars program is designed to provide catalytic financial assistance for students from low socio-economic backgrounds who have already received financial aid but require additional funding to be able to take advantage of these opportunities abroad. The program funds expenses not typically covered by scholarships and that require modest support such as airfare, transportation fees, visa fees, accommodation, and related needs. This program recognizes the nuanced challenges faced by students on scholarships and seeks to act as a catalyst for their academic journey, providing targeted assistance to alleviate specific barriers that may hinder their progress.
In line with the enduring legacy of Cardinal Dery, all scholarship recipients are required to commit to returning to Ghana upon completion of their studies. This stipulation is rooted in the cardinal’s life-long commitment to using education as a tool for national development. Recipients are expected to use their acquired knowledge and skills to contribute positively to the socio-economic development of Ghana, continuing the cycle of giving back and uplifting the next generation.
Cardinal Peter Dery’s life was marked by his commitment to the less fortunate, and his efforts have left an indelible mark on the educational landscape of Ghana. He was instrumental in providing education for hundreds, including Naa Prof. Edmund N. Delle Chiir VIII, the father of Dr. Sangu Delle, which deeply influences the mission of the Sangu Delle Foundation.
Dr. Sangu Delle, Founder and Chairman of the Sangu Delle Foundation, spoke passionately about the vision behind the scholarship: “Brilliance is evenly distributed, but opportunity is not. This scholarship honors Cardinal Dery’s legacy by ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent gifted students from reaching their full potential.”
Ms. Theresa Osei Tutu, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Cardinal Dery Foundation, also highlighted the collaborative effort in selecting the scholars. “The Cardinal Dery Foundation is committed to promoting the legacy of Cardinal Dery through education and service. By partnering with the Sangu Delle Foundation, we ensure that more deserving students have the resources they need to succeed.”
The Cardinal Dery Foundation will play a crucial role in promoting the scholarship and aiding in the selection process of applicants, she added.
Interested applicants are encouraged to apply through the foundations’ official channels. The selection process will be rigorous, emphasizing not only academic excellence but also leadership potential and community involvement.
The launch of the Cardinal Dery Scholars Program marks a significant milestone in the Sangu Delle Foundation’s commitment to education and development in Ghana. It promises to be a transformative initiative, fostering the next generation of leaders and change-makers.
