Yendi, Ghana – MTN Ghana has made a donation of fifteen thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢15,000) to His Majesty the King of Dagbon at the Gbewaa Palace towards the 2024 Damba Festival celebration this month.
The telecom company also presented cartons of assorted fizzy drinks, water and airtime worth two thousand cedis (GH¢2,000) to His Majesty Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II.
Kwami Akude, MTN Ghana’s Regional Branches Manager for the Northern Regions who led a team to Yendi on Friday said, “MTN places a lot importance on the things that matter to our people and one of those things is the celebration of festivals. We belief that festival celebrations actually reveal a lot about our society and it also brings out the best in us as African people.
“…..MTN is an African company and so we also belief in our values and our principles as Africans because that is what identifies us. And because we’re also an African company, we belief in the values and heritage of Africa and of course Ghana”, he said.
Mr. Akude added: “Over the years we have supported of a lot of traditional authorities in the celebration of festivals and that’s why we’re here again this morning. As part of our commitment, we’re presenting a cheque of GH¢15,000 to the Kingdom. We’re also supporting with airtime that is worth GH¢2,000. We have also brought some assorted drinks and water.”
MTN Ghana is also supporting in various ways an inter-community football gala, grand durbar and some other activities earmarked for the celebration.
Experiential centres have also been setup in the Yendi township to provide services to customers who maybe experiencing network, data or mobile money services on their phone.
The Yaa-Naa in his remarks welcomed the MTN staff and thanked them for their continuous support to the Dagbon Kingdom and its people.
Speaking through Musah Yakubu, a spokesperson, the King prayed for the “prosperity and growth” of the telecom company in Ghana and beyond.
The Damba festival is celebrated annually by the Dagomba, Gonja, Nanumba, Mamprusi and Waala people across their respective traditional areas in Northern Ghana.
The festival is an occasion to thank God for His blessings of good harvest from their farming activities, prosperity and peaceful coexistence. Damba is also celebrated to glorify the King of the Dagbon Kingdom and all royals across several paramountcies amidst drumming, singing and dancing by the sons and daughters of the kingdom.
