Ashesi Launches LLB Program Focused on Law, Governance, And Public Policy

Brekusu, Ghana – Ashesi has received approval from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and the Ghana General Legal Council to begin a new Bachelor of Laws with public policy program.

The program, now accepting applications, is aimed at equipping students with the tools needed to navigate complex legal and policy challenges in Ghana and beyond.

A first in Ghana, the program also combines legal education with a foundational understanding of public policy and policymaking, preparing graduates for impactful careers across private, public, and nonprofit sectors.

This program further extends Ashesi’s commitment to offering diverse pathways for students to positively impact the continent. With a strong emphasis on practical experience, students will also have opportunities for internships, mooting, and engagement with leading professionals in the fields of law and governance.

“In Ghana and on the continent, there is a gap in translating our activism for rights and interest in constitutional standards into practical legal work within the public sector,” explained Associate Professor Maame Mensa-Bonsu, Head of Ashesi’s Law, Humanities, and Social Sciences Department.

“This program aims to address that gap by training civic-minded legal professionals who can effectively implement public policy aligned with our constitutional goals. Our goal is not just to train lawyers who excel in legal practice or individuals who create great policies, but to develop professionals who understand the interplay between law and policy and can bridge those domains effectively.”

The LLB program, in addition to new undergraduate majors in Economics and Mechatronic Engineering also started this year, brings Ashesi’s total undergraduate programs to nine, empowering students with a broad range of opportunities.
