Damongo, Ghana – The immediate past Northern Regional Secretary and incoming Regional Secretary of the Savannah Region, Mr Salisu Be-Awuribe, has cautioned the various constituencies in the newly created Savannah Region to be very careful in strengthening the regional executive body to the detriment of the various constituencies.
Speaking at the first ever Savannah Region NDC stakeholders meeting held at Damongo and attended by former governement appointees who hail from the Savannah Region, sitting MPs and former MPs, current and former Regional Executives, current and former Regional Council of Elders, Principal Constituency Executives and other identified key individuals, Mr Be-Awuribe urged the various constituencies not to make the mistake of weakening the constituencies by abandoning them and moving to contest regional positions.
Mr Be-awuribe said that the NDC comprise many able men and women who could help work for the party to win back power in 2020.
He further reminded the various constituencies that the strength of every party is in the grassroots who were mostly based in the constituencies.
He explained that if the grassroots that would help maximize votes for the party decide to move to the regional level, it weakens the strength of the party at the grassroots and therefore urged the constituency executives not to rash to the regional level.
Mr Be-Awuribe also urged the party to consider the minority tribes in the regional executive body since the region is not made up of only Gonjas.
The Chairman for the meeting, Amadu Seidu, former MP for Yapei- Kusawgu Constituency spoke about the need for NDC members to bury their differences and think about moving the party forward.
Alhaji Sulemana Yussif, MP for Bole- Bamboi Constituency who was the only MP present said no MP had the right to impose any person to be part of the executive body in the region but could only suggest a candidate to take part in the contest.
Madam Olivia Yahaya, a former Northern Regional Women’s Organiser of the NDC also urged the party to consider unity and hardwork in the party since one did not need to be a regional or constituency executive before they could be recognized in the party.
Alhaji Limuna Muniru, former Minister of Agriculture suggested that Alhaji Amadu Seidu should chair a committee to organize the upcoming election.
He urged the committee to work as fast as they could to facilitate the smooth organisation of the election.
A suggestion to share vacant positions among constituencies was however shot down by majority of the people who attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, a total of fifteen vacant positions are to be contested for.
