Nandom, Ghana – Farmers in the Nandom District of the Upper West Region who registered to participate in governments flagship agricultural programs Rearing for Food and Jobs (RFJ) and Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) have received Cashew Seedlings and Sheep for planting and rearing.
Planting For export and Rural Development, was launched in 2018 by government to among other things increase incomes of farmers in rural communities and also increase export of cash crops such as Mango, Cashew and Cocoa.
Whereas Rearing for Food and Jobs which was also launched this year, is also aimed at increasing the production of livestock for local consumption and for export.
Over 450 farmers in the district were supplied various quantities of Cashew Seedlings free of charge on the Planting for Export and Rural Development while 40 farmers received 10 sheep each to kick start the Rearing For Jobs Program.
At a short presentation ceremony at the District Agric office in Nandom, District Chief Executive for Nandom, Mr. Thaddeus Arkum Aasoglenang implored all beneficiaries to produce good results with the crops and animals.
He said the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led government seeks to improve the lives of the Ghanaian farmer, hence the introduction of these flagship programs.
Mr. Aasognenang said the Planting for Food and Jobs Policy which was introduced in 2017 has been a tremendous success.
He said this is reflected in the increased in volumes of food crop production across the country.
Mr. Aasoglenang however expressed concern about reports of alleged smuggling of fertilizer to Burkina Faso.
He said “I have engaged with the security services in the District to deal drastically with anyone who is arrested in the act”.
