Tamale, Ghana– Rudder Communications has released names of its 2020 most influential personalities from Northern Ghana.
The release of the list of names forms part of the implementation of its annual human capital development project dubbed: “The 100 Most Influential Personalities From Northern Ghana” (The 100 MIPs).
The project uses the success stories of natives of Northern Ghana who are making impact in society or excelling in their career to inspire school children and other young people through its 100 MIPs magazine.
The organisation which is collaborating with its subsidiary Savannah News, believe that when young people read about people they consider as their role models, it goes a long way to inspire them to also work hard to achieve their dreams.
“Constant reading by young people has the power to cause an improvement in their literacy knowledge. Reading about the successes of some of the personalities who are scientists, artists or entrepreneurs, could ignite their desire to also pursue similar dreams”, Executive Director of RudCom, Joseph Ziem explains the reasons behind the project.
According to him, the next phase of the project is to write the citations and biographies of all the 100 MIPs. “We are contacting each personality to request certain information from them to enable us develop their biographies. In the next six months and beyond, this is what we will be doing including working towards the production of the magazines. When we’re done with all these, each MIP will be contacted and their citations presented to them at their place of work or home”, he said.
There have however been calls by some individuals and institutions to make the project an award scheme that brings together all MIPs on a single platform to present citations to them in the presence of the media, family members and other dignitaries.
But Joseph Ziem response to the calls said that, “the project is not an award because RudCom wants to be different from other institutions. Awards schemes normally come with a lot glitz and glamour and all the hype and as a result, individuals who get nominated for such honour usually focus on themselves and the trophy or plaque they are to receive. But we want people to really feel proud for being nominated or voted for because they merit it and their life story would be used to inspire a village boy or girl somewhere who probably has no hope of what they would become in future. We want our children and younger siblings to relate to stories of people who also grew up in the same environment they’re growing in but by dint of hard work made it to the top of their career or succeeded in life. These are the reasons why we chose to call it 100 MIPs project and not 100 MIPs award. If we make it an award we would eventually deviate from the objectives we want to achieve.
“Also, let me add that the project is not a rating tool that seeks to classify achievers and non-achievers. Anyone who gets nominated really deserves it. We cannot nominate everybody at a go. But since it’s a yearly project, every native of Northern Ghana anywhere who meets our criteria would definitely be nominated in future projects. It’s once in a lifetime and so those who made it to the list in 2019 and this year cannot be nominated again in future. But there is a second chance for persons who couldn’t garner enough votes to be added to the list”, he stated.
To be considered for nomination, a person must have excelled or is successful in their chosen career or profession; must have made significant progress to the top of their career when compared to their peers; or must have made significant impact in the lives of other people or the community they hail from.
