Profile of Railway Development Minister Designate

John-Peter Amewu is the immediate past Minister of Energy in Ghana. Prior to his position at the Energy Ministry, he was the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources from February 2017 to August 2018 where he waged an effective campaign against illegal mining and the wanton destruction of areas endowed with Natural Resources in Ghana.

John-Peter Amewu is a Cost Engineer by Profession with broad knowledge in the energy and mining industry. He has over 20 years working experience in government, private sector, civil society and international development organisations.

John-Peter Amewu has indeed distinguished himself as an astute public officer. He is passionate about national environmental sustainability devoid of illegal mining and also the availability of cheaper and affordable energy in a clean environment for Ghana’s industrialisation drive.

Director of Research and Policy – Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Accra. (Effective 1st Jan, 2013). Part of a project team in the development of an alternative gas policy for the government of Ghana for consideration by the house of legislation. It includes the examination of the value chain of the gas sector from the wellhead to the burner tip and an alternative proposal for gas pricing policy and unbundling of the ownership and the transmission segment of the industry and the development of alternative gas master plan.

Africa Regional Extractive Industries Manager- Regional Extractive Industries Knowledge Hub – Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) (Until 31st Dec 2012).

Expert in drafting and review of revenue management law in the oil and gas sector.

Part of a project team to review the Revenue Management Bill for the Republic of Ghana. Sixteen of the suggestions made on the Law were all taken and input into the bill which was passed into law. (2011-2012)

Developed modules in oil and gas management at masters level for Ghana institute of management and public administration (Jan, 2012 -Dec 2012).

Two times course convener for annual summer school on oil and gas governance and revenue for African Countries involve in extractives industry. (Feb, 2011- Dec 2012).

Provide consultancy services to the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) in the preparation of the annual reports on the management of Ghana’s oil and gas revenue. It involves the examination of the roles of all the agencies and department under the revenue management law and a detail analysis of the oil lifting regime with all the partners to reflect the fiscal regime in the petroleum agreement (Dec, 2011- Dec 2012).

Provide consultancy service as a Senior Energy Policy Analyst to the Civil Society Platform on oil and gas on various issues relating to the management of Ghana’s
emerging oil and gas revenue and the exploration and production activities of the oil and gas sector in the country. And, also as an Advocate involved in the review of the Petroleum Commission bill, which was passed into law as the regulator of the upstream sector in Ghana.
